The Department of Trauma boasts a unique nursing model featuring the “true” trauma nurse. This nurse is a trauma and burn specialist who exclusively cares for the injured patient from the time of presentation and resuscitation, through the critical care phase, and into convalescence.

The high caliber trauma nurses staff the resuscitation area, the Trauma ICU, and the trauma step down area. The same nurses are equally capable to staff the Burn ICU and step down when necessary.

Each Trauma Nurse is trained and certified in critical care and as a Trauma Nurse Specialist (TNS). Additional training is offered in Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS), Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS) and Emergency Communications Registered Nurse (ECRN). Trauma Nurses work closely with the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Division assisting in the coordination of care among physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, nutrition and pharmacy
